Optional Excursions

On Tuesday, there are two options, please choose ONE, as these run simultaneously

The Pima Air & Space Museum --  Tuesday, Sept. 23

The Pima Air & Space Museum is one of the largest non-government funded aviation and space museums in the world! Featuring over 400 historical aircraft, from a Wright Flyer to a 787 Dreamliner. Sitting on 80 acres, the museum opened its doors to the public in May of 1976. Over the past forty years the museum has grown immensely and today encompasses six indoor exhibit hangars (three dedicated to WWII). Nearby is The Air Graveyard (aka The Boneyard) where over 3000 planes are stored outside.  While tours through the Boneyard are no longer available, we can see the planes from a distance.

This is a big place so for an extra $10 (paid on site) you can hop on a Trolley and rest your feet!

The Museum’s Flight Grill will be a great place for you to stop and have lunch, the eatery features floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Navy and Air Force Fighters. From the patio you can watch as aircraft take-off and land from Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.

Downtown  Tucson – Tuesday, Sept. 23

History Buffs will love downtown Tucson. The Pima County Historic Courthouse stands as one of Tucson’s most well known landmarks.  No longer in use as a courthouse, it now contains one of the best Gem & Mineral museums in the southwest as well as many other exhibits.

Needs exercise?  Follow the turquoise painted trail for 2.5 miles through the downtown area and be immersed in the history of the Southwest.

The area offers many eating places and shopping opportunities.

The Town of Old Tombstone-  Wednesday, Sept. 24

We will have a guide meet us for a walking tour of the town.  There will be plenty of time to see the "living museum" of Old West history, site of notorious O.K. Corral shootout, The Bird Cage Theatre, Boothill Graveyard, Crystal Palace Saloon. Step back in time with the wild west, hysterically correct gunfight show at our Old Tombstone Theatre! Enjoy some tasty grub at our Chuckwagon Restaurant and then "belly up to the bar" at the themed Cantina. Between shoot-outs you may pan-fer-gold, mini-golf or take aim at the interactive shoot'n gallery.  A very entertainment filled day.

Tombstone will be our longest excursion and will take most of the day.  The bus ride will be approximately 1.5 hours to Tombstone.

Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum – Thursday, Sept. 25

Focused on the preservation of the Sonoran Desert, The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum will turn your idea of a museum inside out. Guests will enjoy a quintessential Sonoran Desert experience which includes: an unforgettable fusion zoo, botanical garden, natural history museum, aquarium and art gallery. Explore 21 acres with two miles of walking trails. Highlights include Stingray Touch, the Hummingbird Aviary, Warden Aquarium and Earth Sciences Center where guests descend into a replica limestone cave.

Enjoy live animal presentations that showcase a variety of desert animals and be sure not to miss Raptor Free Flight where native birds of prey fly so close you can feel the brush of feathers! Peak season is Summer but there should still be activity in late September. For native flora and fauna, there’s no better place for spectacular photos. The perfect spot for bird watchers! TripAdvisor’s #1 Tucson attraction.

The Museum’s permanent mineral collection has been acknowledged as one of the finest regional collections in the world.

There is a restaurant and a coffee bar to enjoy lunch at or just take a break to sit and relax.  Wine and beer are available, you can even walk around the area with the beer!  We must stay hydrated (teasing – water is probably preferable for hydration.)

We encourage everyone to do their own research on the above places, they are all unique and are all amazing places.

While we can anticipate warmer weather all the above have air conditioned buildings to cool off in and drinking water will be plentiful.
